About Terror Nova
Updated 2007/12/01 1:10 PM

Terror Nova is a Horde-faction, Eitrigg-based World of Warcraft guild primarily composed of researchers and writers who study virtual worlds. Its origins can be traced to Terra Nova, an ongoing blog on all things MMO (and then some), and an earlier incarnation of this guild (called “TerrorNova”) on the Hobbesian nightmare of a server called Magtheridon. Unlike most other guilds, Terror Nova is mostly comprised of real world professionals who study these worlds for a living – and whose professional and personal offline responsibilities make their /play hours precious and few. We chose to band together online as a source of serious play and socializing. Our mission statement is a testament to that fact:

*Guild Mission Statement*

The first and foremost goal of Terror Nova is to socialize and have fun. Loot is secondary. Uberness is secondary. Even PvP rank is secondary (despite its beloved status). Our aim is to give RL colleagues and friends a chance to play together. Alt.toons are not only tolerated but encouraged.

Terror Nova is not an “in character” guild. We do not role play in any meaningful way. In fact, we often discuss real life issues and research questions in guild chat given our shared out-of-game interests in virtual worlds writ large. Moreover, our governance is overwhelmingly democratic. The fact that we are RL colleagues and friends mitigates the need for hierarchical, top-down dictatorship. However, should members choose to abandon the set of basic principles we have all agreed to upon joining, then the responsibility of banning, booting, and other forms of punishment and penance falls on our Bare Leader, who really can be a nasty son-of-a-bitch when the situation demands it.

Although we do not take ourselves seriously, we do take raids seriously when we’re on them. Owing to busy professional lives and insane travel schedules, regular raids are scheduled one night a week (usually Tuesday evenings, times CST) with impromptu raids organized ad hoc.
